Ανάπτυξη του θρησκευτικού τουρισμού στην ορεινή περιοχή του όρους Πάικου (Master thesis)

Δίγκα, Ειρήνη

Religious tourism is this form of tourism, which is not a new phenomenon since it counts many years of existence and presence in the history of humanity. Indeed, it is one of the first forms of tourism that made its appearance thousands of years ago. In particular, it is an alternative form of tourism that is primarily motivated by the desire of the believers to get in contact with their faith and consequently with their own religion, a desire that for hundreds of years was the primary cause and reason for the faithful to visit certain holy places and destinations. Meanwhile, the acquaintance with tradition, culture and civilization of a destination was another reason for the faithful to visit this sacred destination. It is worth noting that religious tourism represents a fairly attractive market, which in turn contributes to further development and flourishing not only of the already developed regions but also of the undeveloped ones. In particular, religious journeys around the world are one of the most growing segments of the market, with millions of tourists visiting religious areas every year, where most of them take place in Europe. This diploma thesis initially attempts to give the semantics of the multidimensional phenomenon of religious tourism, as well as the historical retrospective and evolution of this phenomenon over the centuries, categorizing it into categories. At the same time, it attempts to discriminate-differentiate the terms of religious tourist from pilgrim. After that, are analyzed the prospects for the evolution of religious tourism generally in Greece, its problems and prospects for development as well as its contribution to the development and evolvent of the regions, where it develops. The main concern and subject of this diploma is the possibility of developing this phenomenon in the mountainous region of Mount Paiko (eastern part-Religious administration of Goumenissa Diocese), the difficulties that arise during this transition stage, the attitude of the local community and the active role and involvement of the strong local actors (key-stakeholders) for the promotion and development of religious tourism in the region. In conclusion, the findings as will be extensively analyzed in the text of this study, bring together all the possibilities and prospects for the development of the phenomenon of religious tourism combined to the other forms of alternative tourism developed at the same time in those areas, is reinforced by the analysis that will follow the results of secondary research as well as by primary field research, through two structured questionnaires. In particular, through this survey, the primary goal was to identify the profile of tourists-visitors visiting or intending to visit the study area, their level and sources of information, as well as the image they have created regarding to religious tourism generally and especially in the specific area of study as well as the actions and effects that have taken place or are taking place right now for the development of the particular form of tourism or other forms of tourism in the highlands of eastern Mount Paiko.
